I get asked a lot if I photograph newborns. And the answer is yes. But in a lifestyle, documentary sort of way. It’s not all Pinterest-y or too set up. My goal is to capture moments and not set ups. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not my thing.) I am inspired by people’s emotions and interactions with their children and/or babies, so this type of photography feels right for me.
I was talking to a friend recently and told me that she gets really sad every time she looks at her set up baby photos. She realized later what she really wanted was a photo that captured what it was like for her and her baby at that time. Something that had emotion and a story. That is what I’m trying to do. I don’t have any babies but if I did this is what I would want for myself. It’s also the same way I approach birth photography.
If you do want a set up baby photos, I am happy to refer you to some really good photographers!
Here’s a perfect example of how I approach newborn photography. This is Baby Austin, son of Monica + Evan. (Click here to see their maternity shoot.)
